What is shoulder pain?

Shoulder pain is a condition that can affect the mobility, strength, and overall function of one or both shoulders. As one of the most mobile joints in the body, the shoulder is made up of bones, tendons, muscles, and ligaments that are prone to injury or inflammation. Pain may appear suddenly after physical strain or trauma, or develop gradually as a result of wear and tear, poor posture, or underlying medical conditions.

Causes

Shoulder pain can have multiple causes. The most common include:

  • Tendonitis or bursitis, involving inflammation of the tendons or the bursa.

  • Rotator cuff tears, frequently seen in older adults and athletes.

  • Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), which severely restricts movement.

  • Osteoarthritis or joint degeneration.

  • Overuse injuries or direct trauma.

  • Nerve compressions in the neck or cervical spine that radiate to the shoulder.

  • Systemic inflammation due to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.

A proper diagnosis allows to identify the exact cause and avoid unnecessary treatments.
