What is lower back pain?

Low back pain is discomfort located in the lower part of the back, between the rib cage and the pelvis. It is one of the most common reasons for medical consultation and can range from mild discomfort to severe, disabling pain. It may be acute (lasting less than six weeks) or chronic (persisting for more than three months) and often affects quality of life, mobility, and emotional well-being.

Causes

There are a number of potential causes for low back pain, including:

  • Herniated discs or degeneration of the intervertebral discs.

  • There are two possible causative factors for the condition under discussion: namely, muscle contractures or sprains resulting from physical overload or bad posture.

  • Spinal osteoarthritis, which is the wear and tear of the vertebral joints.

  • Vertebral fractures, frequently associated with osteoporosis.

  • Scoliosis and spinal deformities.

  • Emotional factors such as stress, anxiety and depression.

  • Sedentary lifestyle and weakness of the core muscles (abdominal and lumbar region).
